Clashes As Toxic Waste Hauled to German Dump

Anti-nuclear activists clashed with police in Leitstade, Germany as they tried to get to the track in the path of the Castor train carrying nuclear waste.

It is on a journey from a reprocessing plant in France to a storage facility at nearby Gorleben. Activists tried to block roads in the woods of Leitstade, clashing with riot police, sending flares and setting fire to an armoured personnel carrier. Police used water cannon to disperse the demonstrators.

Activists maintain that neither the waste containers nor the Gorleben site, a temporary storage facility, are safe.
