Montreal - 5th Shoe Pyramide Event

Handicap International - The Shoe Pyramid is a symbol of Handicap International's fight against anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions. Since 1995, citizens from all over Europe have come together to stand side by side with Handicap International to demand the ban of these barbaric arms and to show support for victims.

Much remains to be done today. It is important to continue our fight to make the Treaty enforceable and enforced to obtain the complete eradication of cluster munitions and to change the situation of the victims.

As the public throws more pairs onto the Pyramid, these shoes become a symbol of the devastation, misery, the limb or the life lost by thousands of men, women and children following the explosion of a landmine or ckuster munitions. The immensity of the Pyramid invariably causes one to reflect on the suffering of these victims and their families - and on our responsability to recognize and repair the violence perpetrated against their rights.

Rendez-vous September 24, 2011 at Phillips Square (Downtown Montreal).

Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley - also known as the West Memphis Three -- were teenagers when they were wrongfully convicted in 1994 of the murders of three children in West Memphis Arkansas. As highlighted in the landmark HBO Documentary "Paradise Lost," the investigation of these murders and subsequent arrests and trials were tragically mishandled, and amounted to little more than a witch hunt. To date, not one piece of substantial evidence, physical or otherwise, has connected the three men to the crime.

Now, after spending more than 16 years in prison, new DNA and forensic evidence has proven the innocence of the West Memphis Three.

This 20-minute video explores the new evidence in the case and gives Damien Echols a chance to speak in his own defense. Compiled from new defense and expert testimony, an interview with Echols on Larry King Live, and footage from '"Paradise Lost," 'West Memphis Three: Time For Truth" explores the latest chapter in this harrowing miscarriage of American justice, and leaves you aching to get involved.

"This is the most powerful and comprehensive visual representation of this very complicated story that we have seen to date. We only wish we could condense the facts so effectively." - Dennis Riordan and Don Horgan, Lead Counsels for Damien Echols

Trial to Strip Jamal Mubarak and El Baradei of Egyptian Nationality

Trial to Strip Jamal Mubarak and El Baradei of Egyptian Nationality.

The administrative court postponed until June 19 a lawsuit filed by lawyer and activist, Hamed ‎Sedik, to petition the minister of interior and the cabinet to strip Gamal Mubarak and ‎Mohamed ElBaradei of Egyptian nationality.

Mr. Sedik argues that Gamal, the younger son of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, should not be allowed to keep his nationality because he was granted British citizenship without permission from ‎Egyptian authorities.‎

Likewise, presidential hopeful, Dr. ElBaradei, a former general manager of International Atomic Energy Agencies, should be dealt in a similar manner for acquiring Swedish nationality.

90 Pregnant Girls In One Memphis High School!

A high school in Memphis is suffering from a teenage pregnancy epidemic after approximately 90 of its students fell pregnant or have recently given birth.

The startling rate of teen births at Frayser High School fall in line with the high teen pregnancy rates in the entire Frayser community.

A high ranking city official confirmed the figures and said the community planned to roll out a new initiative to help combat the troubling problem.

According to the DailyMail, the new campaign called 'No Baby!' has been launched to educate both teenage girls and boys about how to prevent and deal with unplanned pregnancies.

The program is also tailored to give girls the confidence to 'just say no' to sex.

But one Frayser High School graduate said that teen pregnancy has been a problem at the school for a long time.

'When we would come back from summer break, there would be a thousand people pregnant. We were like, what's going on?', Alicia Williamson joked who graduated from Frayser six years ago.

'There were a whole lot of bellies. You had to watch out so you didn't bump into them. Being 2011, I thought a lot of them would have thought this is not the right way to go, having babies during school time', she added.

Frayser High School has 978 students - 508 of which are girls which means nearly 18% of the female class members are pregnant or have recently had babies.

Sisters' Prison Release 'Conditioned on' Kidney Donation

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R) has announced that he will grant an early release from prison to two sisters serving unusually long sentences for armed robbery.

According to TheWashingtonPost.Com, Gladys and Jamie Scott have each served 16 years of life sentences. Their case had become a cause celebre among civil rights groups, including the NAACP, which mounted a national campaign to free the women.

Civil rights activists said Thursday that they welcome Barbour's decision. But an unconventional aspect of the arrangement is drawing scrutiny from medical ethicists: Barbour said his action was "conditioned on" one sister donating a kidney to the other.

Barbour agreed this week to suspend their sentences in light of the poor health of Jamie Scott, 38, who requires regular dialysis. The governor said in a statement that 36-year-old Gladys Scott's release is conditioned on her giving a kidney to her inmate sibling.

Russian Building 5000 Bomb Shelters by 2012 in Moscow

Nearly 5,000 new emergency bomb shelters will be built in Moscow by 2012 to save people in case of potential attacks.

Moscow authorities say the measure is urgent as the shelters currently available in the city can house no more that half of its population.

According to the website Rt.Com, in the last 20 years, the area of air-raid defense has been developed little, and the existing shelters have become outdated. Moreover, they are located mostly in the city center, which makes densely populated Moscow outskirts especially vulnerable in the event of a nuclear attack.

In order to resolve the issue, the city has given architects a task to construct a typical model of an easy-to-build shelter that will be located all over the city 10 to 15 meters underneath apartment blocks, shopping centers, sport complexes and parks, as in case of attack people will need to reach the shelters within a minute.

Moscow saw its first mass building of shelters in the 1930s, after which 7,000 of them were constructed. Some of Russia’s metro stations have been built very deep underground so that they could double as air raid shelters.

However, in the early 1990s, many shelters were privatized by commercial firms that used them as warehouses, parking lots, and even restaurants.

Pope shooter alleges Vatican planned the assassination

The killer who murdered a left-wing journalist in 1979 and then shot and wounded the Polish pope in 1981, has appeared on Turkish television. The man who spent 19 years in an Italian prison and ten in a Turkish jail was released earlier this year.

According to Euronews, uring the interview Agca alleged that the Vatican planned the murder of the pontiff. "The Vatican government decided to assassinate the Pope. They planned and organised it. The order to shoot the Pope was given by Vatican secretary, Cardinal Agostino Casaroli."

Cardinal Casaroli was the Vatican's Secretary of State under John Paul II. He was the man behind the Rome's efforts to deal with the persecution of Catholics in the Soviet empire. Agca's latest accusation is just one of many he has made since he attempted to kill the Pope. At the time of the shooting he said he acted alone.

The Pope was shot twice in the stomach, once in the right arm, the fourth bullet hit his little finger. He went on the make a complete recovery.

The Vatican has not responded to the accusations.

Viktor Bout: The Merchant of Death Trial

* First Video:

In Merchant of Death, Douglas Farah and Stephan Braun tell the true story of Viktor Bout, a young Russian intelligence officer who, since the end of the Cold War, has redefined how wars are fought in much of the developing world.

By gaining access to unguarded weapons arsenals and a fleet of several dozen aircraft, Bout became a one-stop shopping service for all sides in many wars, from Afghanistan, where he armed the Norther Alliance and the Taliban, to the jungles of Colombia and the diamond-rich regions of West Africa. The human cost of the illicit weapons trafficking has been enormous, enabling criminal and terrorist groups to achieve new levels of violence and destruction.

The national security cost has also been high, enabling a sometime-ally to enrich his coffers in order to develop new lines of business into Somalia, Lebanon and Nigeria, where he arms those seeking to destabilize entire regions and plot against the United States.

* Second Video:

A criminal court in Thailand has rejected a request by the U.S. to drop a second set of charges against alleged Russian arms dealer Viktor Bout.

The decision dents Washington's plans to have the man extradited to the U.S to face trial on terrorism-related charges.

A new hearing is expected to begin in Bangkok on October 5th. RT gets more analysis from investigative journalist and author Daniel Estulin who has interviewed Victor Bout in Thailand.

* Third Video:

Douglas Farah, the author of 'Merchant of Death: Money, Guns, Planes, and the Man Who Makes War Possible', talks about the human cost of war.

* From the author publisher :

"While there's no shortage of books on international terrorism, drug cartels and genocide, the international weapons trade has received less attention. Journalists Farah and Braun center their absorbing exposé of this source of global misery on its most successful practitioner, the Russian dealer Victor Bout. Throughout the Cold War, they show, the Kremlin supplied arms to oppressive regimes and insurgent groups, keeping close tabs on customers; after the U.S.S.R. collapsed, the floodgates opened in the 1990s. With weapons factories starved for customers, Soviet-era air transports lying idle and rusting, and dictators, warlords and insurgents throughout the world clamoring for arms, entrepreneurs and organized criminals saw fortunes to be made. The authors paint a depressing picture of an avalanche of war-making material pouring into poor, violence-wracked nations despite well-publicized U.N. embargoes. America denounces this trade, but turns a blind eye if recipients proclaim they are fighting terrorism, they say. Ruthless people who shun publicity make poor biographical subjects, and Bout is no exception. The authors' energetic research reveals that rivals dislike him, colleagues admire him, enemies condemn him, and Bout describes himself as a much-maligned but honest businessman. Although an unsatisfactory portrait, the book surrounds it with an engrossing, detailed description of this wildly destructive traffic." (Source: Amazone.Com)

CIA Mind Control

During the Cold War, the CIA launched a highly classified program aimed at mastering the art of mind control.

According to wikipedia, the project's intentionally oblique CIA cryptonym is made up of the digraph MK, meaning that the project was sponsored by the agency's Technical Services Division, followed by the word ULTRA (which had previously been used to designate the most secret classification of World War II intelligence). Other related cryptonyms include MKNAOMI and MKDELTA.

A precursor of the MKULTRA program began in 1945 when the Joint Intelligence Objectives Agency was established and given direct responsibility for Operation Paperclip. Operation Paperclip was a program to recruit former Nazi scientists. Some of these scientists studied torture and brainwashing, and several had just been identified and prosecuted as war criminals during the Nuremberg Trials.

Several secret U.S. government projects grew out of Operation Paperclip. These projects included Project CHATTER (established 1947), and Project BLUEBIRD (established 1950), which was renamed Project ARTICHOKE in 1951. Their purpose was to study mind-control, interrogation, behavior modification and related topics.

Headed by Sidney Gottlieb, the MKULTRA project was started on the order of CIA director Allen Dulles on April 13, 1953, largely in response to alleged Soviet, Chinese, and North Korean use of mind-control techniques on U.S. prisoners of war in Korea. The CIA wanted to use similar methods on their own captives. The CIA was also interested in being able to manipulate foreign leaders with such techniques, and would later invent several schemes to drug Fidel Castro.

Experiments were often conducted without the subjects' knowledge or consent. In some cases, academic researchers being funded through grants from CIA front organizations were unaware that their work was being used for these purposes.

In 1964, the project was renamed MKSEARCH. The project attempted to produce a perfect truth drug for use in interrogating suspected Soviet spies during the Cold War, and generally to explore any other possibilities of mind control.

Another MKULTRA effort, Subproject 54, was the Navy's top secret "Perfect Concussion" program, which was supposed to use sub-aural frequency blasts to erase memory, however the program was never carried out.

Because most MKULTRA records were deliberately destroyed in 1973 by order of then CIA Director Richard Helms, it has been difficult, if not impossible, for investigators to gain a complete understanding of the more than 150 individually funded research sub-projects sponsored by MKULTRA and related CIA programs.
