According to wikipedia, protest activity surrounding the WTO Ministerial Conference of 1999, which was to be the launch of a new millennial round of trade negotiations, occurred on November 30, 1999 (nicknamed "N30" on similar lines to J18 and similar mobilizations), when the World Trade Organization (WTO) convened at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle, Washington, United States.


The negotiations were quickly overshadowed by massive and controversial street protests outside the hotels and the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, in what became the second phase of the anti-globalization movement in the United States.


The scale of the demonstrations—even the lowest estimates put the crowd at over 40,000—dwarfed any previous demonstration in the United States against a world meeting of any of the organizations generally associated with economic globalization (such as the WTO, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), or the World Bank).


The events are sometimes referred to as the Battle of Seattle or the Battle in Seattle.

Dramatic footage captured of Madeira floods

Portugal's government promised to send financial aid to Madeira where violent floods and mudslides killed at least 42 people and declared three days of mourning.

A British woman was among the dead. The victim - named as 50-year-old Pamela Gaines from Garton-on-the-Wolds in East Yorkshire - was apparently swept away in capital Funchal when the taxi she and husband George were in was engulfed by water.

He is said to have received minor injuries, along with another couple in the car, but the taxi driver was also reportedly swept to his death.

The Foreign Office said: "We can confirm one British woman has died. Next of kin have been informed."

Peter Ramos, of Hospital Cruz de Carvalho, said of the 120 patients received on Saturday three were from the UK.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, originally from the island, said he would play in a special charity match for Madeira organised by Portuguese champions Porto.

Amateur video taken aboard a cruise ship shows a massive wave smashing windows and flooding parts of the vessel.


Two passengers died and 14 were injured when the wave struck the ship which was sailing near Spain Wednesday.

Stabbed hero dies as more than 20 people stroll past him

A heroic homeless man, stabbed after saving a Queens woman from a knife-wielding attacker, lay dying in a pool of blood for more than an hour as nearly 25 people indifferently strolled past him, a shocking surveillance video obtained by The Post reveals.

Some of the passers-by paused to stare at Hugo Alfredo Tale-Yax last Sunday morning and others leaned down to look at his face.

He had jumped to the aid of a woman attacked on 144th Street at 88th Road in Jamaica at 5:40 a.m., was stabbed several times in the chest and collapsed as he chased his assailant.

In the wake of the bloodshed, a man came out of a nearby building and chillingly took a cellphone photo of the victim before leaving. And in several instances, pairs of people gawked at Tale-Yax without doing anything.

Later, another man stopped, leaned over and vigorously shook Tale-Yax’s body. After lifting the victim’s head and body to reveal a pool of blood, he also walked off.

Not until some 15 minutes after he was shaken by the pedestrian — more than an hour and 20 minutes after the victim collapsed — did firefighters finally arrive and discover that Tale-Yax, 31, had died.
