Child Marriage In Bangladesh

Twenty years ago the United Nations adopted the Convention of the Rights of the Child. The CRC or UNCRC, is an international treaty setting out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights of children. Nations that ratify the UNCRC are bound to it by international law.


As of December 2008, 193 signatories have ratified it, including every member of the United Nations except the US and Somalia. The UNCRC has been used as a blueprint for child protection legislation around the world. The treaty restricts the involvement of children in military conflicts and prohibits the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography.


Bangladesh is a signatory to the UN pact. However, child marriage remains a widely accepted practice. According to a UN report, 63 per cent of all Bangladeshi girls below the age of 25 are married off before they reach the legal age of 18. Non-governmental organisations in the country are trying implement a clause in the UNCRC to protect underage brides.

In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking other users into a desired emotional response[ or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

In addition to the offending poster, the noun troll can also refer to the provocative message itself, as in "that was an excellent troll you posted". While the term troll and its associated action trolling are primarily associated with Internet discourse, media attention in recent years has made such labels highly subjective, with trolling being used to describe intentionally provocative actions outside of an online context.

According to wikipedia, for example, recent media accounts have used the term troll to describe "a person who defaces internet tribute sites with the aim of causing grief to families."

Police in Central Russia have detained eight people suspected of leading an attack on a rock festival.

They say the brawl could have started after a local cafe owner argued with a member of the audience. Up to a hundred young men started beating up the crowd with clubs at the 'Tornado' festival in the Chelyabinsk region.

Some eyewitnesses said they even heard gunshots. More than ten people have been injured, two remain in hospital. Earlier reports suggested the mob were members of a nationalist gang, but regional authorities have since denied those claims.

Some three thousand people were at the festival during the attack.

Extreme Tantrum

The video was released by the police when it became public record. A security video from a McDonald's in Ohio shows a woman punching two restaurant employees and smashing a drive-thru window because she couldn't get Chicken McNuggets.

The tantrum caught on tape in Toledo earlier this year shows the customer reaching through the drive-thru window, slugging one worker and then another. She then grabs a bottle out of her car and tosses it through the glass window before speeding off.

It happened early on New Year's Day. Police say Melodi Dushane was angry that McNuggets weren't being served, because it was breakfast time.

Dushane says she was drunk at the time. She was sentenced to 60 days in jail last month and ordered to pay McDonald's for the broken window.

Outrageous: Donkey Cruelty

Police in southern Russia will launch a probe into an initiative by local entrepreneurs who sent a donkey into the sky on a parachute in an advertising stunt.

The official spokesman for the local directorate of the Interior Ministry told reporters that the parachuting donkey incident took place last Thursday on an Azov Sea beach in the Temryk District in Krasnodar. "They gave this donkey a parachute ride in order to attract holidaymakers' attention to this sort of entertainment. The parasailing donkey brayed and the children cried, but no one was smart enough to inform the police about the incident," RIA Novosti news agency quoted the official as saying Monday.

The police will launch a probe and if the entrepreneurs are found guilty, they could face criminal persecution under the article on cruel treatment of animals of the Russian Criminal Code, which carries a maximum punishment of two years in prison.
